Festival of Trees

G Building Community just put a lot of smiles on the faces of children and adults a like. A "Christmas Tangled" was created for the first time at the Annual event of the Festival of Trees sponsored by Primary Children's Hospital.

Wolverine Crossing had about fifteen G building residents and about five other Wolverine Crossing residents participate in showing their expertise, in artwork, set construction, interior design, community networking and fund raising to sponsor a magical and enchanted set that was based off of the movie "tangled".

Our Mission in decorating this tree was to "heal what was hurt", and "save what was lost" by providing hope to all that would see a Christmas Tangled tree.....

THANK YOU to all the residents that participated or donated money to help bring back hope to the life of a child through this Christmas Tree.

All money raised by the selling of the tress at the Festival of Trees goes back to the community in helping children at Primary Children's Hospital.

4. Buy a book by your partner's favorite author: This shows that you put that extra thought into finding them a gift.

5. Go for a classic - Delivery of flowers or a package: The flowers are more for a girl, but girls love something as simple as a beautiful bouquet of lovely flowers.

6. Print out a hard copy of a picture of you together: You must have tons of pictures together! Walt Disney once said, "Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language." I think he is referring to the language of love ;)

7. Give your significant other something that will make their college life easier: Yeah this doesn't sound very romantic, but if you can get your significant other something that they have been in need of, (whether or not it's school related) then they will probably really appreciate that you did!

Hey Wolverines!! For those of you who are in school, I'm sorry, but just think, you are that much closer to graduation. Ya, easier said than done.Anyway, I've been thinking about how awesome you all are and if I know any of you like I think I do, how much you will all looove getting free stuff. So, you should all go check out THE ZONE. On campus right across from the bookstore and right next to the UCCU bank you will see an area with all kinds of activities going on. There are FREE Monday morning waffles, coupon-ing on Tuesdays, you may even want to learn how to play the Ukelele on Thursdays with Ryan, but one thing is for sure....no one can pass up a free smoothie from the Tiki Hut, and that is everyday at noon (or somewhere around 12) ladies and gents, yes I said EVERY day!! Well, I hope to see your beautiful faces in the Zone sometime soon, if you see me, make sure to ask me for some candy ;) Love you Wolverine Crossing peeps!!

Did you all know that Wolverine Crossing has UVU tutors here every night in the Community Room?!?! We are the only apartment complex that has this commodity. What a Cool Privilege. We have MATH, Science, BIOLOGY, reading, ENGLISH, and many more subjects are offered! It is every night in the Community Room (right by the east pool) from 6-9pm. Come check us out! Sometimes you'll find FOOD, sometimes you'll get dates! And you will always walk away feeling smarter and less stressed about your classes. Dares or Challenges:
The saltine cracker challenge or simply the "saltine challenge" is a competition in which a person has 60 seconds to eat 6 saltines (also known as soda crackers), without drinking anything; all the crumbs must be eaten too. Although the challenge sounds easy, it is actually very difficult, because the crackers quickly exhaust the saliva in one's mouth. Even though six saltines can fit in one's mouth all at the same time, and a minute is plenty of time to chew, the resulting mess of crumbs resists swallowing. One is not allowed to use any external liquid to aid in mastication.
Milk chugging, or gallon challenge, is the process of consuming a large amount of milk within a set period of time. Although there are variations in procedure, many adherents follow to the mostly general parameters; a person is given 60 minutes to drink a full gallon of milk without vomiting.

The Cinnamon Challenge is a prank in which one person dares another to swallow, without the aid of water, a spoonful of ground cinnamon within sixty seconds. The spice dries the challenge taker's mouth and is almost impossible to swallow. Some accidentally inhale the cinnamon which causes temporary but severe chest pain, much to the amusement of the challenger.

How the Game Works:
-The game will go from MONDAY, OCTOBER 17th to NOVEMBER 17th. You have ONE MONTH!
-All players (assassins) will receive an email with the name of another assassin.
-Your mission is to assassinate your assigned victim.
-If you are killed, you are out of the game. Your killer will then receive the name of the person you were hunting and attempt to assassinate him/her before being assassinated.

Example: Bob, Suzy and Fred all submit their names to participate in the game. Bob is assigned to kill Suzy, and Suzy is assigned to kill Fred etc. Bob finds Suzy reading a textbook in the library. Bob pulls out a can of silly string, covering Suzy and declares, “you’re dead.” Suzy then surrenders Fred’s name to Bob. Bob’s new mission is to assassinate Fred. The killing frenzy continues until there is one assassin left standing.

-Three fabulous gifts and prizes will be awarded. The first prize goes to the last assassin standing. The second to the assassin with the most kills and the final prize goes to the assassin with the most creative kill.

1) Listen and Ask Questions: People like to know that they are being heard. By making a conscious effort to show you’re intrigued by what they are saying, it will show that you’re genuinely interested in being their friend.

2) Give a Compliment: Even if no one likes to admit it, everyone loves a little ego boost! It doesn’t need to be a HUGE compliment, it can even be as small and saying “Hey, I like that shirt you’re wearing!” The key is to simply be genuine!

3) Ease up on the Texting: You’re less likely to meet new people if you are constantly texting. Take a few minutes to put your cell phone down and notice the people around you! When you’re texting it gives others the impression that you’re unavailable, so give everyone a chance to get to know you!

4) Get involved: You can always meet new people in new settings! Be involved! Go out and participate in social activities through the school or here at Wolverine Crossing! There is always someone new to meet!

5) Take Out Those Darn Headphones: ‘Nuff said, right? You won’t meet nearly as many people as you can if you are always listening to music as you walk down the hallways at school or at your apartment. You close yourself off to those around you if you have your headphones in. So give everyone a chance to know you and take those darn things out!

6) Workin Hard Or Hardly Workin: Getting a job is always a good way to make new friends! It will help you make new friends in a setting where everyone has the same hardworking goals! Whether you have a job working in your favorite clothing store, making pizza, or cleaning floors and toilets you’ll have something to complain/ not complain about and bond over with others!

7) HAHAHAHA: Laughing shows that you have a good sense of humor and who doesn’t love a new friend with a sense of humor!

Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto: October 25
For all you crazy Coldplay fans out there, I’m sure you know well how the group’s latest studio effort was intended for a 2010 release but got delayed for almost a full year. Now that it’s ready for release, the group is hoping for a successful debut on the charts and radio. The first single off the album, Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall, has sold over a million copies worldwide since it’s June release, and peaked at number four on the US charts. No track listing has been released for the album yet, but rumored tracks include Charlie Brown, Major Minus, and Moving to Mars. If the new album is anything like their last studio effort, we’re in for a real treat. If any of you have seen the group live, you know that their music is refreshing, original, and they are ridiculously talented musicians. Don’t miss out on what’s to be another hit for these brit-boys!

Drake, Take Care: October 25
Drakes freshman debut, Thank Me Later, came out just last year, and turned the Canadian hip-hop artist into an overnight star. Since then, industry hit-makers have been lining up to work with the young superstar. The track list hasn’t been finalized, but rumored collaborations include Stevie Wonder, Florence (without the machine), Jamie Foxx, The Weekend, Rick Ross, The Neptunes, Justin Timberlake, and Lil Wayne. The first single off the sophomore album, Headlines, came out in August and has had average chart-success, but isn’t showing any sign of slowing down on radio and other outlets. How will this album be different than his first? “"I didn’t get to take the time that I wanted to on that record. I rushed a lot of the songs and sonically I didn’t get to sit with the record and say, 'OK, well maybe I should change this verse.' "Once it was done, it was done. That’s why my new album is called Take Care because I get to take my time this go-round." Sounds like we’ve got something coming that’s been carefully penned for all of you Drake-lovers.

When Kelly Clarkson releases new music, Kelly Clarkson comes back with a bang. Her highly-anticipated return the music scene this fall has everyone hanging countdown chains on their walls. This female power-house vocalist is infamous for belting fist-pumping anthems and spine-chilling ballads, and is ready to deliver another full set of new music that’s sure to launch her back into the spotlight. Her fifth studio album is the follow-up to the 2009 critical and commercial hit, All I Ever Wanted. The new album is reported to be different than what we’ve heard before, with influences citing Sheryl Crow, Muse, Prince, Radiohead, and Tina Turner. Hi everyone!

My name is Chase Boyle and if you don't know me then I shall tell you now that like most, I am largely affected by music. Music can affect my mood, my demeaner, society and my focus. I've been writing my own music for around five years now and I really get a lot of joy from composing lyrics and melodies together in a twine of sounds and guitar riffs. EXERCISE FOR ALL!

One of our many fabulous facilities we have here at Wolverine Crossing is our gym!! YAY! We are fortunate to have such a nice and open gym, with great equipment. Health is really important and keeping our bodies healthy and strong is something that will follow us for the rest of our lives, as well as keeping our minds sharp as we tackle this thing called College. Freshman 15 is VERY common but you can keep that “high school bod” with a few simple exercises and habits while in college, regardless if you are a “Freshman” these can be very beneficial to you!!
5 Exercises you can do in OUR gym that are very valuable:

1. Elliptical machines: Cardio is very important for our heart, keeps us going strong and is also a great way to shed a few extra pounds. Also with the handle option it gives your arms a chance to do some work when your legs get a little on the tired side, naturally helps to tone and strengthen your arms.

2. Dumbell Curls: Start with your elbows to your sides, raise one dumbbell and rotate forearm until forearm is vertical and palm faces shoulder. Lower to original position and repeat with opposite arm. Continue to alternate between sides. Dumbell curls focus on your biceps mostly, also muscles in your forearms. Great exercise for guys and girls! GIRLS: DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE SOME HEAVY WEIGHT, PUSH YOUR SELF YOU WON’T “BULK UP!”

3. Lat Pull Downs: Grasp cable bar with wide grip. Sit with thighs under supports. Pull down cable bar to upper chest. Return until arms and shoulders are fully extended. Repeat. NEVER PULL DOWN BEHIND YOUR HEAD, INJURY MAY OCCUR. This exercise focuses on your Latissimus dorsi which is the largest muscle in your back.

4. Seated Shoulder Press: Position dumbbells to each side of shoulders with elbows below wrists. Press dumbbells upward until arms are extended overhead. Lower to sides of shoulders and repeat. Your shoulder muscles which are called your Deltoids are the main focus of this exercise.

5. Russian Twist. This exercise is great for your abdominals. Which having a strong torso will always keep you on top, it’s the most important for any sport to have toned and tight. You can hold a dumbbell when doing this exercise to add resistance. Make sure you are rotating your torso when moving not moving your arms only.

Now you have it! A great work out that you can do in our great gym! There are MANY, MANY more exercises that our gym offers to help keep us all in shape, if you ever have questions or want help with anything in the gym let me know! I would be more than willing to help you become comfortable in the gym and help you meet your fitness goals whatever level you may be at!

UVU Week of Welcome is the best way to start fall semester! Last night was the huge Green Out Dance which was CRAZY!! Tonight (Wednesday) is True Wolverine at 11:30 in the Court Yard at UVU. On Thursday there is a Drive in Movie (Thor) at 9:30 and Friday there is a tailgate party for the Volleyball homecoming game!!

Fall semester is just around the corner! Have you decided on a Major? Is it as interesting as these majors that are found throughout America.

At Carnegie Mellon University there is a Bagpipes Major. It is a one-on-one bagpipe studio course taught by a master piper. At Liberty University there is a Women's Ministries Major. This major teaches the "role of Christian Women in Ministry." Harrisburg Area Community college offers a riveting Auctioneering Major. The program requires two semesters of "procurement and appraisal Merchandise". If you thought UVU had a great Culinary Arts programs don’t be mistaken by Kansas State University Bakery Science Major.

Although UVU doesn't have these interesting majors it still has lots to offer! Wolverine Crossing is tightly connected to UVU and is an awesome place to live while going to school! Don’t wait to get housing that is so close to the best university EVER!

Our Colorful Spring

To celebrate the arrival of spring, Wolverine Crossing residents participated in the annual Festival of Colors, or the Holi Festival, held each year at the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. Saturday and Sunday were spent enjoying yummy Indian food, touring the temple, listening to some great music and most importantly throwing colored powder all over friends to celebrate spring. As you celebrate the "wearin o' the green" this year, check out our St. Patrick’s Day facts and trivia to help you become a little more knowledgeable about this Irish holiday!

It is said the St. Patrick died on March 17^th, hence we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on this date.
St. Patrick’s real name was Maewyn Succat and he was born in Scotland (not Ireland!) around 385 A.D.
Leprechauns are the official shoe makers of the fairy kingdom.

Shamrock is the national flower of Ireland.

The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737. It was first celebrated publicly in the U.S. in Boston.

UVU's Tutoring Services Now Available Here at Wolverine Crossing!!!

UVU's Tutoring and Academic Skills Services -- the Math Lab, Academic Tutoring and Writing Center, are joining us here to provide tutoring at Wolverine Crossing! Tutors will be in the study room on the 4th floor of Building G, Monday - Thursday 4:00 to 9:00 pm, starting Monday, January 10th. A writing tutor will be there for about 10 hours each week and his/her schedule will be posted in the study room.

One of their best math and science tutors will work each evening. Lucas will be available Monday and Wednesday nights. Lucas recently graduated with a double major in math and physics. He can tutor any math or physics class, as well as most biology and engineering classes. Richard, who has a degree in Chemistry, will tutor on Tuesday and Thursday nights. He can tutor any chemistry class, and nearly every math and physics class. Both Richard and Lucas can tutor Organic Chemistry, and they both speak Spanish (but they don't consider themselves to be Spanish language tutors).

Tutoring is free and available to any UVU student. Come and take advantage of this amazing resource, now without having to leave Wolverine Crossing! For more information, call 801-863-8310.

The Masquerade Ball!

We just had our Masquerade Ball and it was a total blast! We were glad to see so many of you there! We had tons of cupcakes, scrumptious treats to dip in the chocolate fountains, and other festive sweets to enjoy through the night.

You were there dressed to impress and we saw some especially amazing gowns and masks! Everybody that came was ready for a great time. The dance floor was packed with people dancing to the best songs all night! If you weren't able to make it, try not to feel too bad. It was such a success that we just might have to make it an annual event!

Moving out of your parent’s home for the first time is an exciting experience. College students have to learn to support themselves after eighteen or nineteen years of pick-me-up from mom and dad. Shopping, cooking, cleaning, getting your homework done, making it to soccer practice on time, among many other things are no longer mama or papa’s job. The responsibility rests on the shoulders of a naive bunch of overgrown kids. BUT! Let’s look on the bright side of college independence for a minute.

When I was about seven years old my best friend and I would spend the nights playing in the street and hiding from the call for bedtime. I recall a particular night when we were traipsing up and down the street causing all sorts of mischief (well as much as any seven-year-old little girls could) when my dear friend realized she was in need of a restroom. It was dark outside, and probably far beyond the time that our parents would normally summoned us to our respective homes. We both became concerned about the fun coming to an end, and decided that the best way to avoid be called to bed would be to find an alternative place for my friend to relieve herself. Neither of our houses was safe at that hour. We continued to attend to our business, until the kidneys of my close friend were on the verge of explosion. We had to think fast and, being the geniuses that we were, we decided the best place for her to go would be behind a tree somewhere. Unfortunately we didn’t make it to a tree in the back yard, like we planned…actually; we didn’t make it behind a tree at all. I guess she couldn’t take it anymore, and I wasn’t about to blow our cover by letting her into my house, so in the middle of my front lawn, my friend took a pee. Our night was saved and we continued to have a fulfilling thirty minutes of play time beyond that.

Living independently presents a solution to the problem that I faced many years ago. I no longer need to finish my broccoli unless I want to. I no longer have to make my bed every morning. I no longer have to fear having my friends sent home by my parents. My friends and I can continue to have midnight adventures without the stress of knowing that a bathroom may not be available for use. My toilet is open all night, but just as a reminder…you’re still responsible for the grocery shopping. BUY TOILET PAPER.

Stuff you don't know what to do with?

Ever have so much stuff and you don’t know what to do with it?!
WOW I know sometimes I do!
An extra shirt from Ross, the year old pair of jeans that you HAD to have! There’s always stuff piling up here and there. I am going to share a few things that have helped me become organized!
First of all, before you buy something, think to yourself, “Do I really need this?! Am I going to use this in a week, a month?” Some things are definitely worth the money, other things, not so much!
Second, At least once a month, if not once a week, de-junk your bedroom/apartment. Shirts that you haven’t worn for 11 months, get rid of, its okay I promise! Give it to the DI, someone will enjoy it  Get rid of your freshman year math test that you got 100% on! (I say this because I found mine the other day! Haha)
And third, be creative with your room! It is your room, so make it fun and put things on the walls, in the closets, or on the desks. Make collages of old pictures that you don’t know where to put, use resources! It’s amazing how creative you can become!
The main point I want to put across is that your room should fit you! It should be a place a refuge, not discomfort! When you walk into a clean environment, you have a better day! “Little things make the biggest differences!”

5 ways NOT to get a date !

Top 5 Ways a Guy can be undatable (straight from a girl’s mouth!),
5. Not washing their hair. Have you ever seen those Axe hair product commercials? Well, they are pretty much spot on! In order to get some “hair action”, guys, you gotta keep your locks all nice a maintained.
4. Honking/Whistling at a girl. The key here is about R-E-S-P-E-C-T!! This pick-up tactic fails for many reasons. But most of all, it makes the girl feel weirded out. Has anyone successfully attracted a girl using this method? I don’t think so. If I’m wrong, please feel free to email me.
3. Playing video games while a girl watches. Yeah as much as I hate to admit this, your girl just doesn’t like playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 as much as you do. And she especially doesn’t want to sit their and watch you (no matter how long your current kill-streak is). Admittedly, I am a gamer, and even I can’t stand to watch people play video games, so this is a definite NO.
2. Online TMI. Yeah, as much as you hate to admit it, you are not important as you think you are. No girl wants to see a facebook/twitter update every 10 minutes from a guy! This is a especially true if you update before/during/after your date! Live it the moment fellas.
1. Not paying on the first date. No excuse here at all! If you like a girl enough to ask her out you gotta know that the first impression is the most important. No going Dutch, and no “forgetting your wallet at home”. You can pretty much kiss your chances good-bye right from there.

Live Well, Eat Better!

Being away from college can be a great experience until you look in your cupboard and realize that you don't know what to cook. You have all sorts of ingredients but don't know what to do with them all. I have a really simple recipe to solve your problem and cure you of hunger pains for a good while. It's a simple but tasty recipe. I don't have an official name for it but if i did then it might be BBQ Sweet and Sour Chicken :-) Here's the ingredients you'll need:

Chicken (as much as you want to eat)
1 18oz bottle bbq sauce
1 can of pineapple chunks
1 can of olives
1 green bell pepper.
*Pre-Heat oven to 375F
Step 1: Take however much chicken you want to use and cut it into cubes and brown it in a pan with a layer of cooking oil
Step 2: After the chicken is browned you take an 18 ounce bottle of barbeque sauce and pour it in the pan. You can use the juice from the pineapple to rinse out the bbq sauce from the bottle.
Step 3: Then add the remaining ingredients into a large pot that you can stick into the oven.(If you don't have one you can stick in the oven you can cook it on the stove top).
Step 4: Cook for about 30-45 min After eating such a delicious meal you'll be ready to conquer your homework!

School Year Success!

Best way to have a successful school year!!

Who wants to go to college, get good grades, and have a great social experience!? If you’re like me, then these are some goals you have in mind for this academic school year! I am going to share with you, some things that have helped me in the past to reach these goals!!

First make sure you have a set schedule and know what you have going on at all times! Some people make “to-do lists”, some use their phone calendars, and others use a planner. Whatever way suits you best, go for it!

How to make the day most productive and enjoyable with a low stress level is after school, go straight to the library and get your homework done. If you set a couple hours aside just for this, you will find that you won’t get behind and you will see better grades! If you are working a job that won’t allow you to stay at the school for a couple extra hours, move those hours to after work. Once your school work is done, and other high priorities are taken care of, the night is basically yours!! Go out and meet new people!

Stay involved in all school activities and events held at Wolverine Crossing! The more people you meet, and more activities you attend, the more positive social life you will have!

Here are a couple more tips for better academic success!

Meet with your professors! This is a way that helps them know who you are, and notice how much effort you are giving to succeed! This also helps for when you are questioning homework assignments, and struggling with a topic!
Study Groups! Study groups are a good way to have others help you a subject! I know that when I try to teach myself I get frustrated and give up. The other students in the course might explain it differently to a point were I understand it better!
Don’t procrastinate! Procrastinating is a good way to start falling behind! When you stay on top of things, it’s a lot less stressful, and it will help when tests and quizzes come up in class
Get some rest! I know it’s a lot of fun to stay out late with friends, but you’re going to regret it the next morning when you’re sitting in class and can’t keep your eyes open, or focus on the lecture.

I hope that these tips will help you have a successful 2010-2011 school year!!

Wolverine Crossing is unique to all other Housing communities in the area, because we offer you a full Residence Life program. Part of that program, is our Community Ambassadors (aka CA's). We are excited to have such a great group this year. Your CA's live here at the property and they are here to help you. Do you know everything you need to know about getting started at UVU? Its ok, I don’t think anyone does… However, UVU has made it possible for you to be ready for your first day (well as ready as you can be).

Jumpstart is the new student orientation at UVU. All incoming freshman OR transfer students are highly encouraged to get involved with Jumpstart. Students and parents can expect to learn everything they will need to know to be successful at UVU. You will even get a campus tour lead by a fellow UVU student. The best part, however, they feed you lunch, not just any lunch, Jay Dogs lunch!

Dating! What can we say about dating? There has been volumes of books and literature written about dating? But truly does anyone truly understand the rules, signs, gestures of how the dating world is in this present time? Today I would like to start at the beginning with sharing with you some simple pointers about going on a "First Date" .

When you hear the words "First date" what comes into your mind? Does your heart start bounding and sweat droplets begin to accumulate on your forehead and hands? Does your mind go through your closet and then your dresser trying to find the right thing to wear, so you can "Dress to impress?" Are you thinking about what to say? What to ask? What to do? Well lets start answering some answers by going over some simple pointers with you of "Things not to do on a first date" :

1. Don't be late!

2. Don't allow your eyes to wander?

3. Don't text/talk on your cell phone!

4. Don't talk about yourself too much!

5. Don't mention your last boyfriend/girlfriend 1000 times during the night!

If you can follow these five simple rules, and focus on your date, and have good communication and make the night about getting to know each other, it will turn out to be an enjoyable one. Now I want to make clear to all of you reading this that I have not said you have found the "One" but you have started to build something with the one you are on a date with and maybe in the end it might blossom into something great!!!

Wolverine Wednesday, the funny one!

This week’s Wolverine Wednesday is going to make you laugh… not the actual words that I’M writing, the club that I’m highlighting… Really, because that’s what they do… they make people laugh… Something, I am not very good at. Hey! Maybe I could join… (drum roll please)… THE IMPROV CLUB!! (As you can see from my introduction, I need a lot of help with the funny stuff.)
The Improv Club is a UVU sponsored club, which has been around for two years. It was started by Reed Parkinson, a student at UVU. The other members of the club come from many different areas of the school. They have everything from chemistry major to Spanish, from religious studies to communications majors; ironically, none of the club members are actually studying anything to do with performing arts.
So, what does an improv club do? Well they practice and perform improv. Every Wednesday nights at 7pm (in PS202) the club meets to have fun. They play improv games; something you might see on the show “Who’s Line is It Anyways?”. However, most of the time the meetings are just full of fun and laughter; something any college student could use. If you wanted to join in on the fun, the club is open to all. Just head on over to the meeting, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
However, if getting up in front of people, to try and make them laugh is just not your thing, that’s fine! The improve club is still for you! In fact, this week they have a performance on Friday July 9, 2010. The performance will be at the UVU Centre Stage (in the Student Center). The show runs from 7 to 9 pm and… (are you ready for the best part)… is only $2!!! Yep and that’s not even 2 bucks just for you, grab a date and it still will only be $2!!! It’s bound to be one of the best, if not cheapest, Friday nights of your life! So there it is for ya, a perfectly good invitation to a (cheap) night of fun filled laughter!

I know it’s not Monday, however, yesterday was a Federal Holiday, therefore, to most of the country this is the first working day of the week. So I’m going to turn in my “Get out of jail free” card and post Marvelous Mondays on Terrific Tuesday… Just for this week.
This week I would like to introduce you to Kami Poll. Kami is one of our greatest Community Ambassadors. She has been with us for a year now, and has loved every moment of it.
Kami came to us from Morgan, UT. She is a junior at UVU, where she is studying Recreational Therapy. Kami loves to eat ice cream, play the piano, talk and laugh. However, her favorite thing to do is go outside and play a good competitive game of softball. She even played for UVU her freshman year.
Kami became a CA so she could (and I quote), “CHANGE THE WORLD”. To do so she plans programs such as hiking, human mattress dominos, sleepovers, camping and of course laughing. She looks forward to getting to know her residents and “becoming their best friend”. If Kami’s residents could learn one thing from her, she hopes it will be to, “be happy and no matter what, and LIVE YOUR DREAM!”
Kami will always live her life motto to be positive, be nice and serve others. Kami once told me, “Life is superb and I love it!!!!”. There’s nobody better to make you feel that way, than Kami Poll.

Penny War Conclusion

The Wolverine Crossing Penny War finally came to a conclusion two weeks ago. The residents were able to raise $305 for the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters Foundation of Utah. A special thank you goes out to all those residents.

The Penny War concluded with an evening where residents made holiday cards for the families that the foundation helps. Thank you to the residents who came to participate.

As promised, the building who scored the most points during the Penny War got to put a pie in their CAs' face. Building F won, and so Lauren and Jorden got pied.

Again, a special thanks goes out to all those who participated. Wolverine Crossing would especially like to thank the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters Foundation for allowing us to be a small part of what they do, and to thank them for the service that they offer. It's building vs. building and the war is on! Pennies are positive one, while nickels, dimes, and quarters are negative five, ten, and twenty five. The winning building will be the one with most positive points and their Community Ambassadors will get a pie in the face. If we raise an equal amount of dollars to residents, our Resident Director, Tiffany Peck, will also get a pie in the face! All proceeds are going to the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer. Let's support a great cause!

The mission of the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer is to enhance the lives of children with cancer and their families by providing hope, practical and emotional support, patient advocacy, research, and education. It was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with cancer who felt there were inadequate services for their families. It started off as a paraprofessional self-help support group within Primary Children's Medical Center. It then grew to services for children and families outside of Primary Children's as well as inside. As of 2006, the organization is independent of Primary Children's Medical Center and in its own offices in downtown Salt Lake City. The Rocky Mountain Candlelighters serves families of families in Utah, southeastern Idaho, western Wyoming, southern Montana and eastern Nevada; where approximately 150 children are newly diagnosed with cancer each year.

Some services provided by the Rocky Mountain Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer include:

5 Ingredient Recipes!!!

Oh no!! Have you ever come home starving and looked in your fridge only to find it’s empty again?! Shoot! And mom’s hours away not available to fix you the delicious dinner your craving! We’ve all been there; it can be really hard living on your own for the first time! Here are some quick and easy recipes when the cupboard is looking pretty bare! Each of the following recipes can be whipped up with 5 ingredients or less! Good luck!
Fettuccine Alfredo
Ingredients:
• 10 oz. jar Alfredo sauce
• 1/4 cup milk
• 9 oz. pkg. fresh refrigerated fettuccine pasta
• 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Preparation:
In heavy saucepan, combine sauce and milk and mix well to combine. Heat gently over low heat. Meanwhile, cook fettuccine according to package directions and drain well. Immediately stir into hot sauce mixture and toss gently to coat. Serve with Parmesan cheese. Serves 4-6

Ooey Gooey Chewy Bars
Ingredients:
• 20 oz. pkg. refrigerated chocolate chip or white chocolate chunk cookie dough
• 2 cups miniature marshmallows
• 12 oz. pkg. semisweet chocolate chips
• 1 cup caramel fudge ice cream topping
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Slice cookie dough into 1/2" slices and arrange in greased 15x10" pan. Press evenly into pan using floured fingers so dough covers bottom of pan.
Bake crust at 350 degrees for 10-13 minutes until light golden brown. Sprinkle crust with marshmallows and chocolate chips. Return to oven and bake an additional 8-10 minutes or until marshmallows are puffy and light golden brown. Remove from oven and drizzle caramel topping evenly over bars. Cool completely and cut into bars. 32 bars

Almond Joy Fudge Brownies

Ingredients:

1 (19.8 ounce) box Duncan Hines chewy
fudge brownie mix
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
1 (14 ounce) package Miniature Almond
Joy bars, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup toasted almonds

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan .

Prepare mix according to brownie package directions, except only use 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Pour into prepared pan. Pour and spread condensed milk over the top. Sprinkle with chopped candy bars and toasted almonds. Bake for 35 to 38 minutes. Let cool completely before cutting into 2 dozen bars.
Easy Blueberry Pancakes

Make their morning with light, tender pancakes. Your fresh or frozen blueberries make them extra-special.

2 cups Original Bisquick mix
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 cup fresh or frozen (thawed) blueberries

Heat griddle or skillet over medium-high heat or electric griddle to 375 degrees F; grease with cooking spray, vegetable oil or shortening. (Surface is ready when a few drops of water sprinkled on it dance and disappear.)

Stir Bisquick, milk and eggs until blended; gently stir in blueberries. Pour by slightly less than 1/4 cupfuls onto hot griddle. Cook until edges are dry. Turn; cook until golden.

High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): No changes.

Pepperoni Pizza
1 (13-inch) uncooked dough crust
1/2 cup pizza sauce or tomato sauce
8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese
Extra-virgin olive oil
Thin pepperoni slices

Top dough crust with sauce and cheese. Drizzle with oil. Bake in preheated 500 degree F oven on pizza stone for 8 to 10 minutes or until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly.

Remove from oven, add pepperoni slices and cool on a wire rack for 2 or 3 minutes before cutting into wedges and serving.

Wolverine Crossing had it's opening social on Wednesday, September 2, 2009. We celebrated the new school year by holding a carnival. Residents got to enjoy hotdogs, candy, cotton candy, pingpong, games and even a photo booth. Move in Day 2!

Well our big Move-in Weekend is winding down and coming to an end. Our office will be open tomorrow to accommodate anyone who needs to move-in on a Sunday.

We welcomed 60 more residents to the community (we're anticipating a lot more this week as well), and are excited to have them all in our community.

We had another BBQ and hypnotist show. The turnout was great, the residents were wonderful, and we all shared a great night of laughs.

Move-In Day #1

The long awaited day has arrived. We successfully moved in 240 of our new residents today! What an exciting day it was. Students were able to interact with representatives from UVU Athletics, local church organizations, and COSTCO was kind enough to supply all the water for our day. Most importantly, residents were able to meet and interact with family, friends and new neighbors. For many, this will be the first time living away from home. What a great way to start this wonderful time of growth.

We'd like to welcome every one of our new friends to Wolverine Crossing. We are so excited to have you join our community, and want you to know that much lies ahead for you! We have a staff here that is dedicated to helping you succeed and make the best of your university experience. Thank you for making Wolverine Crossing your home!

Now that they've moved in, many of the residents are taking time to make their four walls a new home!

The day was full of excited and anxious residents and parents, employees working hard, smiles and laughter, and was capped off by a fun and entertaining BBQ (we even had a hypnotist out tonight)!

Wolverine Crossing's first "Dive-in" Movie

To finish up our summer contract season, the Wolverine Crossing Community Ambassadors put on a "dive-in" movie at the pool. Get it? "Dive-in Movie" like a "Drive-in Movie"? Anyways, we thought is was pretty witty.

We rented a huge blow up projection screen and sound system to set up by our east pool. The movie (JAWS) started at about 9:30, and was preceded by hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. Here are some pictures from the event.

Thanks to those who planned the event and to those who attended. We've tentatively got another movie night planned for later this month or early next so stay tuned for an announcement on the date.

Resident Spotlight: Whitney Merrifield a.k.a. Miss Utah 2009

As one of the proud sponsors of the Miss Utah Pageant, Wolverine Crossing has become the "Home of Miss Utah". We became a sponsor midway through Miss Utah 2008, Kayla Barclay's reign, and are now proud and ecstatic to have Whitney Merrifield join our community. Whitney was crowned miss Utah on June 20, 2009. Here's Whitney's bio and some pictures of her crowning:

Whitney Merrifield is a student at Brigham Young University, majoring in communications with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism and is a trained classical pianist. As a junior in High School, she was honored to find herself as Miss Pleasant Grove; which led to the opportunity to represent Utah at the National Sweethearts pageant in Illinois, competing against other women who placed first runner-up in their respective state pageants across the country. During that national pageant, Whitney took home a preliminary talent award and a spot in the top ten. As Miss Utah County, Whitney competed again on the state level and in June, was crowned Miss Utah 2009. During her reign, she will spend the year serving as an ambassador of service for the Miss Utah Organization, the Children’s Miracle Network and the Child Protection Registry of Utah. Travelling thousands of miles, speaking and performing at several events per day, Whitney will get the chance to spread her message and continue working on her service platform entitled “Be the Change Utah!” Her goal is to get the Challenge Day program into as many high schools as possible during her year. A native of Lindon, Utah, Whitney is the oldest of seven children. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, dancing, and writing poetry and is fluent in Spanish.

Moving in...

We have been getting a lot of questions in the office about move-in day: what to bring, what not to bring, where to go, etc. We are going to be sending every one of our future residents a move-in packet in a week or so. It will include very helpful information about move-in day, and be able to answer majority of the general questions that our future residents may have. We know there are those who are starting to buy things for their apartment, so to help, below is some information about what you need to bring (all of this will be included in the move-in packet, but for those who can't wait...here you go):

- Shower curtains (and rings) Towels, hair dryer, etc.
- Pillow sheets, blanket and comforter (beds are normal single beds)
- Laundry detergent, basket and clothes hangers
- Trash cans, trash bags and cleaning supplies
- Alarm clock
- Toiletries, sewing kit and tissues
- Computer and Printer
- Ethernet cables (CAT5E) for wired internet access, cable hook up chord
- Money, checkbook, credit or debit card
- Social Security card, birth certificate, or passport and driver's license (needed for employment)
- Kitchen items such as plates, cups, silverware, pots and pans
- Umbrella
- First-aid items, prescriptions
- Power strip (fused surge protector w/reset button/circuit breaker only)
- Mini tool set
- Stackable crates (for storage in room)
- Address book, stationery and postage stamps
- School supplies and backpack
- Small appliances: toasters, toaster ovens, etc... (not microwave)

Remember, these are only suggested items, you may not need all of them, but we suggest you to bring them. There also may be other items that you'll want to bring that are not on this list... the key is to plan ahead. You'll be given your future roomates' contact information to coordinate things like small appliances and kitchen ware.

On Saturday, Wolverine Crossing held a training for our Community Ambassadors. After spending some time getting to know each other better, we spent some time covering several topics that will be helpful in our jobs within the community during the coming year. Some of those topics included office procedures, policy enforcement, student development theory and program planning. Our faculty-in-residence, Dr. Smit, spent some time with us sharing his wisdom. We also decided to take a staff picture to include in the Move-In-Guide that we're working on. Check us out below (we're just missing our lovely Jessica)!

A Fresh New Look

With our change in management last April, recent name change in February, new group of community ambassadors, and a new fresh group of students, we felt it necessary to update our website.

This is what it looked like before:

We wanted our new site to be updated in design, speak more to the overall lifestyle of the community, and highlight resident living. We did a photoshoot in-house with residents and employees, and have been working for the last two months on design and content.

This is the result:

The site includes information on our rates, floorplans and community, as well as helpful links for students: information on local hospitals, tutoring services, financial aid services, employment services and much more.

We hope that the site will serve as:

1.) A good face for our community and
2.) A resource for our residents and their families.

Waking up to a beat...

Friday morning, July 3, 2009, many of our resident woke up to drumming in the parking lot. Wondering what it was, our management staff quickly ran outside to look. Marching and dancing through the parking lot was "The Voice of Africa".

The Voice of Africa (VOACA for short), is an organization which stands as an advocate for African culture through dance, music and song. VOACA strives to provide educational opportunities for its members by granting scholarships that are funded by donations and fund raising events. They have performed at campus events at both BYU and UVU as well as community events and fundraisers.

The members of The Voice of Africa were practicing for the 4th of July Parade in which they marched the next day. We were pleased, and rather refreshed to see such a great display of culture and passion on our property. Among the members of the group were some of our current residents.

The VOACA is currently applying for a grant with the "Nike Back Your Block" program for additional funding for their organization. If you're interested in getting involved, and/or learning more, visit their website at www.thevoaca.com.

Open Mic Night

What a wealth of talent we have here at Wolverine Crossing. On June 25 we hosted our second Wolverine Crossing Open Mic Night. The event was a great success; talented performers, awesome venue, great crowd, and a great time. Thanks goes out to Gray Aydelott and Ephraim Moore for taking the lead on planning the event, and to our other CAs for helping with publicity. A great thanks goes out to Wiseguys Comedy Club for opening their doors for us and being such awesome hosts! Most importantly, thanks to all the residents and guests for supporting the activity.
